The issue
Cancer does not fall evenly in Aotearoa. Our 2023 Annual Report records that Māori are 20 per cent more likely to get some form of cancer. Behind that number are whānau who face barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment, who meet a health system that has not always been a safe place for Māori, and who carry the weight of cost, distance and institutional racism on top of the illness itself.
This is the unfairness we are here to change, and we have been changing it.
Who we are
Hei Āhuru Mōwai is Māori Cancer Leadership Aotearoa, a national kaupapa Māori network of clinicians, researchers, advocates and Māngai. We embed rangatiratanga into cancer control, we work to eliminate cancer inequities between Māori and non-Māori, and we accelerate hauora gain for whānau Māori. Āhurutanga is our backbone. Rangatiratanga is our purpose.
We do this work alongside whānau, Hauora Māori providers, iwi, researchers and decision makers, because the change we need will only come when Māori lead it.
What your gift makes possible
A stronger cancer care workforce
We back the cancer care navigators working in Hauora Māori Partners across Aotearoa. In 2024–25 we launched an online community of practice and a monthly learning series for them, and hosted the first National Cancer Care Navigator Hui-ā-Tau. An independent evaluation of this work across 20 Hauora Māori Partners, commissioned from PwC in 2025, found the partners are delivering culturally safe, compassionate care, and pointed to the need for continued investment.
Research by Māori, for Māori
We grow the Māori cancer research workforce and the evidence base that drives better outcomes. With the Cancer Society of New Zealand we have awarded scholarships to Māori cancer researchers, and with Breast Cancer Cure and Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand we launched the Breast Cancer Fellowship to address the breast cancer inequities faced by Māori and Pacific women. Stronger evidence means stronger advocacy.
A voice that shifts the system
We turn evidence into change at the national level. We supported the call to fully fund cervical screening and HPV self-testing, which became free for wāhine Māori in 2023. We worked with the Cancer Society of New Zealand on its campaign for changes to the National Travel Assistance scheme, whose mileage and accommodation rates rose in April 2024. We make submissions to government, write position statements, and work to make sure whānau Māori are not left out of decisions on cancer policy and funding.
