What this document covers
2023 was a year of leadership change. Hei Āhuru Mōwai farewelled its first Chief Executive, Moahuia Goza, welcomed Cindy Dargaville as Tumuaki in May, established an operations team and confirmed its 2023–2026 strategic goals. Advocacy for lowering the bowel screening age for Māori and Pasifika earned the Tohu Hautoa, Courageous Leadership award, and in July Manatū Hauora committed $7.3 million to fully fund the new cervical screening programme and HPV self-testing.
The report also covers the year's rangahau: the Matariki Rangahau Seminar at Waipapa Marae in July, the first of a planned series of three, and Te Aka Mātauranga Matepukupuku's inaugural symposium, where former Chief Executive Moahuia Goza led a panel on Rangatiratanga as the solution. Two PhD scholarships were awarded under the 2022 New Zealand Māori Cancer Researcher Awards.
