Mō Mātou | About Hei Āhuru Mōwai

Hei Āhuru Mōwai is a national network of Māori cancer specialists and researchers committed to rangatiratanga in cancer control, eliminating cancer inequities between Māori and non-Māori, and improving cancer outcomes for whānau Māori across Aotearoa. Our values are:

Our Hei Āhuru Mōwai Board is seeking expressions of interest for additional Trustees, with an approximate start date of 1 July 2026.  Trustee candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of skills and experience.

 

Mō te Tūranga me Ōu Haepapa Matua | Role Purpose and Key Responsibilities

As Kaitiaki (guardians), our Trustees have a responsibility to safeguard our resources and for providing strategic direction, financial oversight, ensuring long term viability, maintaining stakeholder relationships, and ethical standards and values on behalf of whānau Māori. Our Trustees ensure that Hei Āhuru Mōwai operates in accordance with its charitable purposes, tikanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.

The key requirements of this role are focused on the ability to work within a complex clinical, research, systems and whānau focused governance context.

The successful candidates will bring a balance of passion for the kaupapa, governance and financial or legal experience, leadership, and knowledge of the broader environment in which Hei Āhuru Mōwai operates. The successful candidates will complement the skills and experience of the current Board of Trustees and contribute to effective, future-focused, and culturally grounded governance.

Your commercial acumen will enable you to oversee significant operational and investment decisions for Hei Āhuru Mōwai and on behalf of the whānau that we serve.  You will have the ability to contribute to collective decision making and the credibility and relationship skills to engage confidently across all stakeholder engagements.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with specialist skills in the following key areas:

  • Financial and/or Business Development

  • Legal

  • Technology

  • Economic and/or Community Development

  • Education

  • Health

Ōu Mātatautanga | Your Key Capabilities

To be considered for this role you will need to have:

  • A tertiary level qualification and/or relevant experience

  • Sound strategic and analytically robust decision-making ability

  • Knowledge of governance principles and fiduciary responsibilities

  • Established relationships across whānau, hapū, Iwi and Crown agencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • A high level of integrity, accountability and good judgement

  • Familiarity with and commitment to managing conflicts of interest and confidentiality

  • Commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing of the organisation and the community

  • Understanding of tikanga Māori, Te Ao Māori values

  • Te Reo is an advantage, but not essential

Our Board is committed to working collaboratively, we take a strengths based approach and offer an innovative culture where your perspective and ideas will be welcomed.   

Board meetings are mostly held virtually, usually during late office hours or the evening. Remuneration is via a modest stipend.
